If necessary, a small piece of tissue (biopsy) can be removed for further examination under a microscope. If a polyp(s) is found it can usually be removed during the procedure. You need to be here 30 minutes before your appointment time to allow for preparation for the procedure. You will have an I.V. started in the holding/recovery area. Immediately before the procedure you will be given medication for sedation in the I.V. The test will take approximately 45-60 minutes to complete. You will be returned to the holding/recovery area where you will be monitored for 1 hour after the procedure. The total time in the GI Procedure Unit from arrival to discharge will be approximately 2 hours. So that the physician may make the most accurate inspection possible, please follow these instructions very carefully. 1. Purchase your prescription medications “PREP” at your local pharmacy well in advance of the procedure. Not all pharmacies carry “PREP” The prescription is a prep kit, which includes four (4) Bisacodyl tablets and a 2Liter jug with powder at the bottom. Flavor packets may be included to be added to the jug. THE DAY PRIOR TO THE PROCEDURE YOU MUST BE ON A CLEAR LIQUID DIET. THIS INCLUDES COFFEE, TEA; SODA; JUICE, BROTH, POPSCICLES, JELLO….NOTHING RED. YOU MAY CHEW GUM OR SUCK ON HARD CANDY THAT IS NOT RED. ORANGE JUICE AND LEMONADE WITHOUT PULP ARE FINE. YOU MAY PUT SUGAR OR HONEY TO SWEETEN TEA OR COFFEE BUT NO CREAMER! • Prepare the bowel preparation solution the morning before your procedure. To prepare the solution, add water to the “Fill” line; replace cap, shake well to dissolve the powder. Refrigerate the jug. • The day before the colonoscopy, at 12:00 noon take all four (4) Bisacodyl tablets. Do not crush or chew the tablets. • Also, the afternoon before your Colonoscopy, starting at 5:00p.m.-6:00p.m. drink one glass (8 onces) of the colon preparation every 10-15 minutes. • Initially, you might feel slightly bloated, but will become more comfortable as you have bowel movements. You will have consumed several glassfuls before having the first loose, watery bowel movement. • If nauseated, stop drinking for 20-30 minutes, and then resume at a slower rate. • It will take approximately 2-3 hours to drink. Diarrhea will continue for at least 1 hour after you drink the solution. • Following the instructions above correctly will ensure a clean colon! 2. Please bring a list of the medications you are currently taking. 3. Iron pills and Pepto Bismol turn stool black and resembles blood in the stool. AVOID these products the 4. If you take Aspirin, Ecotrin, Persantine, Coumadin, Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Nuprin) or 5. Other arthritis medications STOP these medications one week before the procedure. Tylenol is okay to take for pain. These medications affect the blood’s ability to form clots. If you have any questions about stopping these medications, please call your doctor. 6. You should not eat or drink anything after midnight. If you are taking INSULIN the dosage may need to be adjusted the day prior and the morning of the test. Contact your physician for instructions regarding dosage. Please check your blood sugar at home before coming in for the test. 7. If you take Prednisone or other steroids or Blood Pressure or Heart Medication, take it before 7 AM with a sip of water on the day of the test. 8. If you are not taking any of the above medications, DO NOT take any other medications until after the 9. Because of the effects of the medication, you may be forgetful and will probably feel drowsy after the exam. You must make prior arrangements for a responsible adult to pick you up from the recovery area and accompany you home-you are not allowed to drive on the day of the exam. You will need an escort to come to the department even if you are traveling by taxicab. THE PROCEDURE WILL BE CA CELLED IF YOU HAVE OT MADE PRIOR ARRA GEME TS TO BE ESCORTED HOME.
