own. But if you feel concerned about a symptom because of its severity or duration and
you are not sure then you can seek further advice from NHS Direct. on 0845 46 47 or

COUGHS AND COLD
It can usually last for a week or two and a cough can last up to four weeks. Symptoms
can include green mucous, coughing, fever and feeling unwell, runny nose and sore
throat. This is generally due to a viral infection and antibiotics do not help. Generally
recommended treatments are paracetamol, ibuprofen, fluid and rest.
SORE THROAT AND TONSILLITIS
Mostly caused by a viral infection, antibiotics have no place in the treatment. Sore
throats can last four to five days. Generally paracetamol and gargling with soluble
aspirin are effective.
SPRAINS
The initial pain and discomfort may last up to a week or so, and some weakness and
pain may persist for up to six weeks. It can be treated with a cold compress.
DIARRHOEA AND VOMITING
It can last two to seven days and can be caused by foods that have been infected by a
bacterium or virus. The best treatment is to rest and have lots to drink to avoid
dehydration. Anti-diarrhoea medication is not usually needed.
CYSTITIS
It is common in women. Symptoms are usually pain on passing urine and frequency
and may have lower abdominal pain, blood in urine and high temperature. Usually a
three day course of antibiotic is sufficient.
