Shell.com.hkSHELL GADUS NAMING SYSTEM
The Shell Gadus grease names are designed to help you Shell recommends the following best practice approach: make the right choice. They include a let er that indicates 1. Check the thickener compatibility guide in this leaflet to
the thickener type. Before changing greases, check the ensure you take a proper course of action.
compatibility of dif erent thickeners using the table in SHELL GADUS GREASE
2. Ideal y, the grease should be changed as part of your
this leaflet. The names also include the base-oil viscosity COMPATIBILITY GUIDE
routine service, when you are already cleaning or and the NLGI, and the letters that tell you about the changing components. Remove al the current grease applications and conditions for which the product DESIGNED TO MEET CHALLENGES
and replace it with new product. If the new product is noted as being “borderline” compatible with the old product in the thickener compatibility guide, the components should be monitored. More frequent greasing may be required until the previous grease is Thickener Special conditions
3. Check the base oil compatibility. Remember that
polyglycol oils are incompatible with mineral or other synthetic oils.

4. Check the base-oil viscosity and the NLGI grade.
A lower NLGI grade may be more suitable with a more viscous base oil, depending on the temperature level from S1 to S5 viscosity grade
5. As for al industrial lubricants, if the equipment has
atypical seals, check the product technical data sheet for seal incompatibility issues.

Mixing incompatible greases can reduce lubrication
efficiency and increase maintenance time and costs,

especial y at high temperatures. Grease mixtures can become too thick or too soft, and may leak from bearings.
To avoid incompatibility problems, Shel recommends Aluminium complex
completely replacing the grease during a routine service.
Before changing to another grease, there are three things 1. Thickener type
2. Base-oil viscosity
3. NLGI grade.
Shell Gadus grease names contain all this information.
• Compatible • Borderline • Incompatible This chart is a guide, and testing may be required to assess compatibility.
