DERMATOLOGY, ALLERGY
& EAR DISEASE SERVICE:
PATIENT PREPARATION

If you’re unsure of the specific skin or ear problem that your pet may suffer
from, you may make your initial appointment with the Dermatology, Allergy,
& Ear Disease Specialists without any individual patient preparation or drug
withdrawals for the initial examination.

Initial exam fee = $100
(These fees do NOT include any diagnostic tests, procedures, or medications, which will be discussed in depth during the initial visit)
IF you are certain you’re interested in allergy testing for your pet
on your INITIAL VISIT, then you MUST follow instructions below:
MINIMUM WITHDRAWAL TIMES FOR ALLERGY TESTING (which may include
Intradermal Testing and/or serum testing methods):
90 DAYS - ALL REPOSITOL (long acting) CORTICOSTEROIDS & PROGESTERONES –
Including but NOT limited to: Betasone, Beta-Methasone, Depo-Medrol, Depo-Provera,
Methyl Prednisolone Acetate
30 DAYS - ALL REGULAR CORTICOSTEROIDS & PROGESTERONES (injected, oral,
and/or TOPICAL) - Including but NOT limited to: Animax, Azium, Cheque drops, DES,
DVMax, Delta-Albaplex, Deramaxx, Dexamethasone, Genesis Spray, Gentocin, Liquichlor,
Malotic, Maxidex, Maxitrol, Medrol, Megace, Megestrol Acetate, Metravet, Mometamax,
Otomax, Ovaban, Panalog, Prednisolone, Prednisone, ResiCort, Synotic, Temaril-P,
Tresaderm, Triamcinolone, Tritop, Vetalog
14 DAYS - ALL ANTIHISTAMINES - Including but NOT limited to: Amitriptyline, Atarax,
Benadryl, Chlorpheniramine, ChlorTrimeton, Claritin, Clemastine, Clomicalm, Clomipramine,
Diphenhydramine, Elavil, Hydroxyzine, Loratidine, Phenylpropanolamine, Proin, Tavist
14 DAYS - DIETARY/FATTY-ACID SUPPLEMENTS - Including but NOT limited to: Derm
caps, EFA-Vet, EFA-Z, Nutrasol, PetTabs, PetTabs FA, 3-V Caps
14 DAYS - FOODS & TREATS - Change dog’s diet over completely by 14 days prior to the
appointment to Purina Dog Chow (found in regular grocery stores) - but NOT Purina Pro-
Plan or Purina ONE
7 DAYS - NO BATH & other meds - Aspirin, Carprofen, Chondroitin Sulfate, Deramaxx, Eto-
Gesic /Etodolac, Glucosamine, Goodwinol, Iodine, Ketofen, Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM),
Metacam, Nolvasan, Phenylbutazone, Rimadyl, Tylenol, Zubrin, and ANY/ALL NSAIDS
5 DAYS - ALL ANTIBIOTICS & ANTIFUNGALS - Including but NOT limited to: Albaplex,
Baytril, Cefatabs, Cephalexin, Ciprofloxacin, Cyclosporine, Dicural, Fulvicin, Itraconazole,
Ketoconazole, Lincocin, Nizoral, Orbax, Oxacillin, Tetracycline, Tribrissen, Zeniquin
DAY OF THE APPOINTMENT - NO FOOD, no tranquilizers
USE OF ANY OF THE ABOVE WILL CAUSE TESTING TO BE INVALID!

Females CANNOT be skin tested if in estrus/season/heat, pregnant, or in false pregnancy
NOT RESTRICTED - Allergen shots, Atopica, flea treatments, heartworm prevention,
Hibitane, Ivermectin/Ivomec, Mitaban, Sulfodene, thyroid medication, witch hazel, Xenodine
If your pet’s allergy is “seasonal” (i.e. limited to or worsens during spring, summer, or
fall),
your appointment should be made in late summer, or fall (Aug-Nov).
THE MEDICAL HISTORY from the veterinarian MUST be brought with the client on the day
of the appointment! This is to assist the Dermatologist, and it will be added to the patient's
medical record. This may include any or all of the following: photocopy of the patient's
record, summary of the patient history, diagnostic tests performed, ANY treatments and/or
medications to date.
The PRIMARY owner MUST BE PRESENT for the first exam (about 2 hrs); the animal will
be here most of the day, usually until between 3:00 and 5:00pm. This is to allow time for
diagnostic tests to
be completed and for all dismissal information to be finalized for each client and forwarded
to their referring veterinarian.
