Microsoft word - colonoscopy prep with golytely_rev 2012

If you need to reschedule your procedure, please call us at least
one week prior, so that other patients can benefit from these
limited spaces. If you have any questions or concerns, please call
the office at (623) 236-8507. If you are calling after hours, follow
the instructions to reach the doctor on call. Thank you.
COLONOSCOPY WITH GOLYTELY (OR COLYTELY) AND 2 BYSACODYL TABLETS
You are scheduled to have a colonoscopy. Please follow these instructions carefully. Since you will be given
sedatives, you will not be allowed to drive after the exam. Please, have someone who can drive and
accompanying you. There are always some risks to any examination. The complications of a colonoscopy
include perforation (less than 1%), infection, bleeding after polyp removal (2%), and drug reactions. The overall
incidence of complications is less than 1%. Colonoscopy is the best colon cancer screening test but there is
about a 5% chance that a colonoscopy could miss an existing lesion such as polyps and/or cancer.
5 DAYS PRIOR TO EXAMINATION
Blood thinners may increase your risk of bleeding during and after these tests.
Stop taking blood thinners 5 days prior to your scheduled procedure. These include but are not limited to:
• anticoagulants: such as: Warfarin (Coumadin), Fragmin, Lovenox, Orgaran or Heparin • anti-platelet agents: such as Aspirin, Aggrastat, Aggrenox, Integrilin (Eptifibatide), Persantine (Dipyridamole), Plavix (Clopidogrel), Pletal (Cilostazol), Ticlopidine, Pentoxifyllin, and many others • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications – NSAIDs: These include Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil, Nuprin),
Celebrex, Relafen, Naproxen, Salicylates, Vadlecoxib and many others You may take Acetaminophen (Tylenol) for pain or fever. Avoid eating foods and fruits that are or contain
seeds (such as corn, strawberries, melons, poppy seeds), and start a low fiber diet (no salads, oatmeal, etc)

1 DAY BEFORE EXAMINATION
You are only allowed to have clear liquids such as: water, tea, black coffee, apple juice, Ginger Ale, 7-Up,
Sprite, Gatorade, clear broth, Jell-O (not red).
No Solid food, no dairy, or creamers. Do not drink anything
with color red. In the morning, mix the Golytely or Colytely prep with lukewarm water, shake it very well and
refrigerate.
At 1:00 p.m. take the 2 Bysacodyl tablets with a glass of a clear liquid of your preference.
This part is only for patients scheduled in the MORNING: At 5:00pm start drinking the Golytely until you
finish the whole solution. You should finish it in about 4 hours (you should take breaks of 15 minutes in
between doses), and follow each glass of the prep with a glass of your favorite liquid from the clear liquid diet
list above.

This part is only for patients scheduled in the AFTERNOON:
At 5:00 pm start drinking the Golytely until
you finish Half of the solution. Drink 8 oz every 15 minutes until you drink half of the solution. Then, six hours
prior to your procedure time, drink the other half of the solution. For example, if your colonoscopy is scheduled
on Tuesday at 1:00 pm, you would consume the first half of your bowel preparation regimen on Monday at 5:00
pm and start the second half on Tuesday at 7:00 a.m.
You may experience nausea or cramping but it will pass. Although rare, if you experience severe vomiting, call
the office. If you are calling after hours, follow the instructions to reach the doctor on call. Consider baby
wipes instead of tissue paper to avoid irritation. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO DRINK LOTS OF FLUIDS

DAY OF EXAMINATION
Take your routine medications (except for blood thinners) the morning of the test with a sip of water.
Important: Do not skip your blood pressure medication. If you are on diabetic pills, don’t take them the morning
of the procedure. If you are on insulin, inject half the normal dose.
STOP TAKING LIQUIDS 5 HOURS PRIOR TO THE PROCEDURE (THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT)
