The spectrum of bacteria sensitive to the combination of sulfadimidine and trimethoprim includes: Staphylococci, Streptococci, Fusobacterium,
Enterobacter, Corynebacterium (excluding Corynebacterium [Rhodococcus] equi), Salmonella, Shigella, Klebsiella, Pasteurella, Haemophilus,
Proteus spp. and most E. coli; some Brucella and Nocardia spp. Most Pseudomonas spp. are insensitive.
Sulfadimidine is a pyrimidine sulfonamide antimicrobial agent which inhibits the incorporation of p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) into dihydropteric
acid, the precursor of folic acid. Subsequent reduction in the level of folic acid reduces the production of nucleic acids in sensitive bacteria.
Trimethoprim is a diaminopyrimidine antimicrobial agent which prevents the reduction of dihydrofolate to tetrahydrofolate which is required by
bacteria for biosynthesis of purines, pyrimidines and some amino acids.
Sulfadimidine and trimethoprim have similar antibacterial spectra, trimethoprim being approximately 20 times more potent than sulfadimidine. The
combination blocks two sequential obligate enzymatic reactions in the microbial folate synthetic pathway. A synergistic action is demonstrated by
the enhanced antimicrobial activity (potentiation) of the combination compared with the antimicrobial activity of either agent singly.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION:
TRIMIDINETM POWDER is for oral administration only.

One level large scoop contains Sulfadimidine 5g and Trimethoprim 1g. One level large scoop contains Sulfadimidine 5g and Trimethoprim 1g. One level small scoop contains Sulfadimidine 1.25g and Trimethoprim Horses: One level large scoop/200kg bodyweight twice daily.
Administer on dampened food or mixed with honey or molasses. Horses: One level large scoop/200kg bodyweight twice daily.
Calves: One level small scoop/50 kg bodyweight daily.
Administer on dampened food or mixed with honey or molasses.
Pigs: One level small scoop/50 kg bodyweight daily.
Poultry: One to two level small scoops/12 L drinking water for 3 to 5
days. Administer mixed thoroughly with food or in drinking water.
Any variation by the prescribing veterinarian to the approved
dose, frequency, duration, route, disease or target species may
require extending the approved withholding period.
WITHHOLDING PERIOD (Australia):
MEAT: CALVES, PIGS, POULTRY: DO NOT USE less than 14 days before slaughter for human consumption.
MEAT WITHHOLDING PERIOD (HORSES): 28 days.
EGGS: DO NOT USE in laying birds where eggs or egg products are to be used for human consumption or processing.
WITHHOLDING PERIOD (New Zealand):
HORSES: Horses producing meat and offal for human consumption must not be sold for slaughter during or within 63 days of the last treatment.
It is an offence for users of this product to cause residues exceeding the relevant MRL in the New Zealand (Maximum Residue Limits of
Agricultural Compounds) Food Standards (New Zealand).
