THE DIGESTIVE DISEASE CENTER ALBANY MEDICAL CENTER COLONOSCOPY- PATIENT INSTRUCTIONS WITHIN ONE WEEK OF PROCEDURE:the following medications usually need to be stopped.
o Iron supplements, vitamins containing iron. o PLEASE check with the prescribing physician about these medications.
Coumadin (Warfarin), Plavix (Clopidogrel), Ticlid (Ticlopidine)
o Diet: Begin low fiber diet, avoid Corn, Popcorn, Raw Fruits & Vegetables, THE DAY BEFORE PROCEDURE: You will have to prep the bowel for this test.
o Diet: Clear liquid diet only, NO solid food allowed. o Purchase physician ordered medication (laxative) to cleanse the colon. o See separate instructions (see back page) for your specific prep. THE DAY OF THE PROCEDURE:
o Take your regularly scheduled oral medications in the morning with a few sips of
water. Injected medications, please ask your prescribing physician for instructions.
o No driving, you MUST have a responsible adult to accompany you home after the
procedure. Otherwise the procedure will be canceled or rescheduled.
o Female patients will be asked to complete a urine pregnancy test if appropriate. o Avoid wearing jewelry. o Park in the West Lot (Free Valet) in front of Neil Hellman Research Building. o Take the A Building elevators to the 4th floor of the Physician Pavilion to check in
o Please bring a list of all your current medications.

Purchase the specified preparation from your pharmacy.
o NO solid food. Clear liquids include broth, clear juices, Italian ice,
Popsicles, tea or coffee without milk, gelatin, soda, bouillon.
Twelve (12) Hours Prior to Time of Colonoscopy
Drink an 8 oz. glass of the prep mixture every 15-20 minutes until half (1/2) of the solution is gone.
Six (6) Hours Prior to Time of Colonoscopy
