It is a combination of cephalosporin antibiotic with a probiotic.It is the most powerful third generation oral cephalosporin antibiotic made safer by intestinal friendly action of lactobacillus.
MECHANISM OF ACTION:
Cefixime is a cephalosporin antibiotic showing its bactericidal action by binding to one of the penicillin binding proteins (PBPs) which inhibits the final transpeptidation step of the peptidoglycan synthesis in the bacterial cell wall, thus inhibiting biosynthesis and arresting cell wall assembly resulting in bacterial cell death.
Cefixime is highly stable in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes. As a result, many organisms resistant to penicillins and some cephalosporins due to the presence of beta- lactamases may be susceptible to cefixime. The antibacterial effect of cefixime results from inhibition of mucopeptide synthesis in the bacterial cell wall.
Lactobacillus acidophilus started the breakdown of food and produce lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide, and other byproducts that make the environment hostile for undesired organisms.
PHARMACOKINETICS:
Absorption& Bioavailabilty:
Only 40-50% is absorbed from the GI tract (oral). Rate may be decreased if taken with food. Peak serum concentrations attained within 2-6 hours, time to maximal absorption is increased approximately 0.8 hours when administered with food Distribution:
Distributed into sputum, tonsils, blister fluid, prostatic fluid, maxillary sinus mucosa, middle ear discharge. Distribution into CSF is not known. Cefixime crosses the placenta and its protein binding capacity is 65%. Cefixime in human milk following a single 100 mg oral dose is Excretion:
Half life of cefidys LB IS 2.5-4 hours.(may range up to 9 hours). In severe renal impairment (5 to 20 mL/min creatinine clearance), the half-life increased to an average of 11.5 hours about 50% of absorbed dose is excreted unchanged in the urine in 24 hrs.
STORAGE:

Cefidys 200 LB DT is used to treat infections of the: Ear: Otitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis and Streptococcus Throat: Tonsillitis, pharyngitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes.
Chest and lungs: Bronchitis, pneumonia caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus Seasonal fever with bacterial infections.
SIDE EFFECTS:
Common side effects are mild & severe skin rashes, head ache, itching, difficulty in breathing and wheezing. PREGNANCY CATEGORY: Pregnancy category is “B” (Animal reproduction studies have
failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in
pregnant women.)
TOXICITY: Symptoms of overdose include blood in the urine, diarrhea, nausea, upper
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Probenecid may increase the serum level of cefixime
CONTRAINDICATIONS:
Cefidys LB is contraindicated in patients with known allergy to the cephalosporin group Cefidys LB is contraindicated in case of pregnant &lactating mothers BEFORE FOOD/AFTER FOOD:
Preferably on an empty stomach, rate of absorption is decreased but extenet of absorption
remains the same: not really problematic.
DOSAGE & ADMINISTRATION:
Adults: Cefidys can be used in patients at above 12 years age
Cefidys 200 LB DT is used every 12 hours for 10-14 days in the following cases: Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis Cefidys 200 LB DT is used every 12 hours for ≥10 days in the following cases: Cefidys 200 LB DT is used every 12 hours for 5-10 days in the case of urinary tract infections.
Cefidys 200 LB DT: 2*200mg tablets once daily is used in following cases : In seasonal Bacterial infections like fever above 12 years of age:
